My work explores and addresses the unusual, the unnatural, the undefinable. The paintings and objects that I make reference my personal experiences as a queer and trans individual; they piece together aspects from the reality of my surroundings, often in an indirect way. Using concepts like narrative, empathy, horror and magic, I build environments and characters that bring to light my existence in a non-binary/agender identity.
Horror plays a large role in my work, especially horror in the light of queerness. There is a common trope in horror to utilize queerness and transness to create the monster or antagonist; my work reclaims this notion. Personally, I’ve always related more to the monster in horror movies, so my work strives to engage the viewer to share the same empathy. By bringing characters into domestic spaces and showing places they find comfortable and powerful, the viewer can relate to them and entrust their humanness with the characters.
Magic has always been an overarching aspect of my practice and work. Like horror, it represents the unknown in our world. Rituals and seances are something that many do every day in their own way. I’m interested in bringing out the power and magic in my viewers as well as for myself; we can all empathize with each other and the characters, building a community of sorts.
Interactivity and play within my work are a constant theme. I want to make paintings and objects that are precious, yet not pretentious. I want a viewer to laugh when they engage in the work. I want the viewer to find narrative and meaning through their experience with the art, with new things unfolding if they take the time to search, much like a person. In that way, I feel very vulnerable in my work. Like they listen as I whisper a secret in their ear.
